RICHMOND, Va. – The VCU Rams baseball program has set high standards over the past three years, with each one coming in at 37 or more wins. With a record of 38-19 in 2016, the standard remains high for 2017 and has not gone unnoticed in the Atlantic 10. On Thursday morning, the Rams were named second in the A-10 Preseason Coaches Poll, only one point behind Rhode Island.
VCU was named second for the second consecutive year, as they were named second behind Saint Louis in 2016. The Black and Gold put up a total of 155 votes, while Rhode Island received 156 in the poll. Rhody would grab six first place votes, while VCU would grab five. Rounding out the top three was Saint Joseph's and Saint Louis, who each piled up 138 points for the third place tie. However, the Hawks would prevail over the Billikens, as they received two of the remaining first place votes.
Spots five through 13 would sport Richmond, Fordham, Davidson, George Washington, St. Bonaventure, George Mason, Massachusetts, Dayton, and La Salle in that order.
The Rams return what was one of the best rotations in the Atlantic 10 last season, as reigning A-10 Rookie of the Year Michael Dailey will be back in action, as well as 2015 regional standout Sean Thompson. Closing things in the back of the bullpen is All-American and last season's NCAA leader in saves Sam Donko. Leading the offense this season will be senior Logan Farrar and Darian Carpenter, who each made their mark against opposing pitching in 2016.
The Black and Gold kick off their season in just over a week on Feb. 17, as they travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on the Seminoles of Florida State University for a three game weekend series. VCU will open its home schedule on Feb. 28 when they play host to the Monarchs of Old Dominion at The Diamond, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
