NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The VCU Baseball program continues to receive recognition for its hot start to the season. On Tuesday, senior Ryan Farrar and freshman James Bunn were the latest to be recognized as the duo garnered Atlantic 10 weekly awards.
Farrar was selected as the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week after throwing eight scoreless innings on Sunday against Saint Joseph's. The Mechanicsville, Va. native, who was also named conference player of the week by CollegeSportsMadness.com, scattered three hits, struck out six batters and earned the win. To date, Farrar has a 2-0 record, 0.69 ERA, with 10 strikeouts and has only allowed seven hits in 13 innings.
Bunn was named the A-10's Rookie of the Week after helping lead VCU to a three-game sweep over the Hawks. The Princeton, N.J. native finished the weekend 5-for-11 (.455) and had a pair of two-hit games on Friday and Saturday. On the year, Bunn leads the Rams in average (.438), hits (seven), on-base percentage (.471) and multi-hit games (three).
The Rams (5-0) are out to their best start since the 1989 season. VCU has not trailed at any point during the first 45 innings of play.
VCU travels to Charleston, S.C. for the Charleston Crab House Shootout presented by Homewood Suites this weekend, March 1-3. The Rams open play with UNC Asheville March 1 at noon.
