VCU BASEBALL PREDICTED TO FINISH FIFTH IN CAA

RICHMOND, Va. - The VCU Baseball team was picked to finish in fifth in the league for 2012, according to a vote of the CAA's head baseball coaches.

VCU, who has captured five of the last 10 CAA titles, garnered 65 points the poll voted on by the leagues' 11 coaches. James Madison, 2011 CAA baseball champions, was chosen as the league's top team entering the season. UNCW was picked to finish second, while Old Dominion and Georgia State followed behind for third and fourth place, respectively. After VCU, George Mason check in at sixth place, while Delaware and William & Mary were predicted to finish in a tie for seventh place. Towson, Hofstra and Northeastern rounded out the preseason poll.

The Rams will look to improve upon a season which saw them go 22-32, and return to their performance in 2010 which saw them win the league championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

The Black & Gold return a talented core of letter winners, in addition to a number of gifted newcomers. The Rams bring back three All-CAA performers from last year's team, including 2011 All-CAA first team honoree Taylor Perkins (.320 batting average, 4 home runs, 38 RBI), second team member Bill Cullen (.324 batting average, one home run, 33 RBI) and rookie team member Joey Cujas (.321 batting average, two home runs, 41 RBI).

VCU opens the season on Feb. 17-19, on the west coast at Long Beach State. The Black & Gold will open their 30-game conference schedule on March 9-11 with a three-game series at home against Towson.
