FORMER RAM SEGARES SET TO JOIN APOLLON FC

CHICAGO, Ill. – Former Virginia Commonwealth University men’s soccer standout and current member of Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire Gonzalo Segares is close to joining Cypriot club Apollon FC.

The deal is contingent upon Segares passing a physical, according to Apollon FC Technical Director Frank Klopas.

"I talked to his agent and I talked to Gonzalo and I think they're pretty close to an agreement with Apollon," Klopas said. "What Gonzalo has told me is that they've agreed to everything and basically it's just a matter of going through and passing a physical. So if he doesn't come in 10 kilos overweight there won't be an issue with him signing. Everything's been agreed to."

The move would halt a five-year MLS stint with Chicago as the Fire selected the defender in the third round of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft.  Segares made over 100 appearances during his MLS career tallying eight goals and seven assists.

While playing at VCU from 2001-04, Segares was a 2004 first team All-America selection and one of three Hermann Trophy finalists as a senior, which is awarded annually to the nation’s best collegiate soccer player.  Segares also received Colonial Athletic Association Defender of the Year honors following his sophomore and senior campaigns.
