VCU DROPS SEASON FINALE, 3-2, AT NORTHEASTERN
Box Score
BROOKLINE, Mass. – It was a frustrating end to the 2009 season for the Virginia Commonwealth University men’s soccer team Saturday as the Rams fell 3-2 at Northeastern.
VCU dropped its fifth-straight one-goal loss, while eight of the squad’s previous nine losses have been decided by a single goal.
The Rams finished the season 5-10-2 overall and 2-8-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while postseason-bound Northeastern improved to 9-7-1 and 8-2-1 in conference action.
The Huskies came out strong and wasted little time getting on the board as a goal by Don Anding in the 5th minute gave Northeastern a 1-0 lead.
VCU’s defense settled after the early score and held the Huskies in check the remainder of the first half, despite being outshot 10-1 in the opening period.
Northeastern took a 2-0 advantage on a goal by Nick Lueders in the 55th minute, before VCU’s Phillip Daldrup took a feed from C.J. Gehin-Scott and pulled the Rams within 2-1 in the 78th minute.
Josh Semerene scored his second goal of the season four minutes later as the Huskies responded to extend their lead to 3-1.
Owusu Seykere found Carlos Picado, who scored for the third straight game and fourth time in the last five matches, to cut the Northeastern lead to 3-2 in the 89th minute, but it was as close as VCU would get.
Northeastern held an 18-11 advantage in shots and an 8-2 margin in corners.
