Senior’s five-point day helps Black and Gold to third straight win
Box Score
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Virginia Commonwealth University men’s soccer team is proving just how good it is as the Rams picked up their third straight victory with a 4-0 pounding of Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Gerson Dos Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) continues to be the offensive leader for the Black and Gold as the veteran tallied two goals and one assist and has now been a part of six of VCU’s past eight goals.
With the victory, the Rams improve to 4-3-0 on the year, while the Chanticleers fall to 2-6-0.
VCU would start its scoring early as the speedy David Rosenbaum (Washington, D.C.) got loose down the left sideline and fed a beautiful pass through the Coastal Carolina defense to a cutting Dos Santos, who put away his second goal of the season from six yards out to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage in just the seventh minute.
Just seven minutes later, Dos Santos would be back at it as he blasted a free kick from 22 yards out into the back of the net to push VCU lead to 2-0.
Junior Jake Van Yahres (Charlottesville, Va.) got into the act in the second half as he took a feed from Dos Santos and split two Chanticleer defenders and rocketed his first VCU goal past the Coastal Carolina goalkeeper to extend the advantage to 3-0 in the 48th minute.
Rosenbaum would cap off the scoring just nine minutes later as he gathered a rebound off a Van Yahres shot and tallied his third goal of the year, giving VCU a 4-0 lead.
The Black and Gold defense would make sure that score would hold up as they held Coastal Carolina to just 10 shots in the contests and posted its second straight shutout and third of the season. It has been 141:39 since a VCU opponent has found the back of the net.
For the afternoon, Dos Santos lead the way with five points, while Rosenbaum had his biggest scoring day of the year with a goal and an assist.
The Rams open up their CAA portion of the schedule on Saturday evening as they travel north to Fairfax, Va. to take on the Patriots of George Mason University in a 7 p.m. contest.
