THE MICHAEL DOLES GAME

VCU 72, UNC Wilmington 71 (Feb. 26, 2005)
Michael Doles certainly made his Senior Day a memorable one.

The game couldn’t have gone worse for VCU for the first 34 minutes. UNC Wilmington was every bit as good as advertised, while the Rams were awful, shooting 29 percent (9-of-31) in the first half. With 5:25 remaining, the Seahawks led 58-39. A comeback did not appear likely.

But the Rams began to use a full-court press and UNCW got sloppy. VCU chipped away to pull within 66-61 with 36 seconds left. VCU’s odds were still long, but they improved considerably after Doles forced a turnover, then knocked down a 17-foot jumper. On the ensuing play, VCU stole the ball near midcourt, and Doles buried a game-tying 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining.

In overtime, Doles hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:31 remaining, and his free throw with 5.1 left provided the final margin. He finished with 22 points as the Rams completed one of the most improbable comebacks in school history.
