VCU 55, George Mason 54 (March 8, 2004)
The Rams returned to the mountaintop in 2004, and it was a 28-year-old coach and a freshman walk-on who helped put them there.
Jeff Capel, the nation’s youngest Division I head coach, led the Rams to 23 wins in his second season at the helm. But it was a free throw by walk-on Jesse Pellot-Rosa with 1.6 seconds left that was the difference in VCU’s first conference championship victory since 1996.
The Rams would later battle a Chris Paul-led Wake Forest team to the wire in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
